The province of Assam is situated in the northeast of India, to the east of Darjeeling between Bangladesh, Myanmar (Burma), and China. Assam is rich in nature's bounty and rainfall ranging from 100 to 150 inches per year - a bounty that ensures a very special place for the teas grown here. For those who favor a bright, strong cup of tea. The low altitude, rich loamy soil conditions, ample rainfall, and unique climate help it to produce some of the finest orthodox leaf teas. It is these unique environmental conditions that give the teas their special quality, reputation, and character and help orthodox Assam Teas to qualify as a Geographical Indication (G1).
Assam tea is usually described as full-bodied and strong with a malty flavor. Full-bodied means that tea is rich and complex and is most often related to black tea. The flavor can range from brisk, smoky, earthy, musky, and strong to a lighter cup with chocolate, cocoa, or even sweet and spicy notes.
Assam teas are vigorous, spicy, tannic, and astringent, typically known as "British taste". The Assam tea plant and its hybrids yield a strong, rich, coppery red cup of tea. At its best, the tea is full-bodied with a malty undertone. All Assam teas or blends are excellent morning teas and go well with a bit of milk.
